Title: Is the 4DR5 engine good for a Defender?
Post by: Ashan_Jayawardene on Jun 12, 2025, 05:06 PM
Machan, I'm looking at a Defender for sale, but it's running a 4DR5 engine. That's a Mitsubishi engine, no? Heard mixed stuff. Someone say it's easy to maintain and parts are everywhere, but others say it's not the best for off-roading like the original Rover engines. Anyone using a 4DR5 in their Defender? How's the pulling power and fuel? Planning to use it for both city and some camping runs.

Yeah machang, My friend  had one with a 4DR5 for a couple of years. It's a reliable engine, easy to fix, and parts you can find even from Panchikawatte. Good on fuel too. But compared to the original TD5 or Puma, the power is less. If you're not doing heavy off-roading or towing, it's totally fine. But if you're planning to do proper jungle tracks, maybe look for something stronger. Otherwise, not bad at all for daily use.  8)
